Presidents Cup Press Conference

The first-ever London President’s Sambo Cup has been started with a press conference of the up-coming event. Vasily Shestakov, FIAS President, Lord Simon Reading, President of the Commonwealth Sambo Association, and Martin Clarke, President of the British Sambo Federation, participated in the press conference. Read our today’s story about all the tournament’s details and special aspects told by event’s participants to journalists.
“Historical roots of the English Sambo are meaningful, and the history of the British Sambo accounts for several decades already. The English national team participated in the first Sambo World Cup organized in Iran in 1973. I hope after holding this tournament, the development of Sambo in Great Britain will become more successful. The British Commonwealth Sambo Championship will also take place in London the next day after this tournament,” said Vasily Shestakov at the beginning of a press conference.
Simon Reading went on, “I’m happy to greet you here in London at the President’s Cup. Sportsmen from 8 countries have come to Britain to participate in the tournament, and I am proud of the fact that we are the organisers of such an event which is interesting for the international Sambo and important for the English Sambo.”
Martin Clarke said, “This is a great event for us, and it pushes the limits of the English Sambo. I remember that Sambo athletes from only 15 countries took part in the 1992 Sambo World Cup while last year 75 countries participated in the 2013 Sambo World Cup held in Saint Petersburg. This fact shows a successful development of Sambo around the world. And I hope our tournament will become a good contribution to the development of Sambo on the planet.”
Timur Kabukaev, President of the Jewellers of North Capital Company, told about the Cup itself (i.e. about the Cup prize), “The most common question I’m recently asked is how much the Cup costs. I want to stress it is invaluable as it includes energy and love that we wanted to give to our favourite kind of sport, Sambo. And today we’re happy to present it to you.”
The winner of this wonderful gem-incrusted Cup weighing for about 10 kg will be known in a few hours. The tournament final will begin in the entertainment centre Bluewater at 5 p.m. local time.

President Cup Thankyou

British Team and Officials

Below is the message I sent round I have included a few photos I will follow this up with a report of the event. Sambo TV were there so there will a lot to watch on the Internet plus they had many professional photographers present

https://plus.google.com/photos/102428263424782695829/albums/6064476549010286033

The Presidents Cup was a great success, I have been involved in organising many tournaments on a World, International, National and local level in Judo, Sambo, Karate, Wrestling, Kurash, CombatSombo and I have never been involved in such an exciting successful event as the Presidents Cup.The venue obviously was the right venue but the reason it was a success was the fact that everyone involved worked as a team; this would never have happened if just one person were in charge. The British Sombo Federation Team were really prepared for this event and it showed in their work presentation and I am very proud of them
This will put Sambo on the British Map with more and more people seeing the benefits of doing Sambo it also so shows how FIAS under the Presidency of Mr Shestakov has advanced in the last few years.
I personally would like to thank all those involved in making this a great event, I feel very proud to have been part of this Presidents Cup

Martin Clarke

Presidents Cup Press Release

The President`s Cup 2014
International Sambo Martial Arts Tournament

The inaugural President's Cup International Sambo Martial Arts Tournament is to be staged in London on Saturday September 27th 2014. The tournament will be held at the Bluewater shopping mall, the largest mall in Europe with up to 100,000 visitors per day.
Sambo is the global phenomenon that has been dominating the martial arts world. It combines the most effective elements of judo and wrestling to produce a system of “defence without weapons,” which is the literal translation of Sambo. Champions of the sport, such as Fedor Emelianenko and Oleg Taktarov, have gone on to dominate the world of cage fighting and MMA bringing the sport to international attention.
The tournament is being organised by the Commonwealth Sambo Association, headed by Lord Simon Reading, and the British Sambo Federation headed by Martin Clarke, with close support from the International Federation of Sambo (FIAS) and their President Vasily Shestakov. Lord Reading, who was keen to promote the successes of the Commonwealth nations in the sport, initiated idea for a British tournament and was delighted to find close support from the major sponsor, “Jewellers of Northern Capital” and their CEO Timur Kabukaev.
The event is a knockout style tournament for the top 8 Sambo nations, with the world’s leading teams competing in one group to qualify for the final: the national teams of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Russia. The second group is formed of Sambo teams representing the British Commonwealth. The teams are divided on a continental basis and include athletes from countries such as South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, Botswana, Canada, Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Cyprus, Hong Kong and Singapore.
The first round for all teams commences at midday, followed by a semi final and then a final that finishes at 6pm. Individual results from the 9 fighters per team go towards a grand total ensuring that the top teams will advance through each round. Teams will comprise both male and female fighters throughout multiple weight divisions with each fighter scoring points towards national glory and the stunning President’s Cup which consists of gold, silver, jade, jasper, turquoise and a host of other exotic stones.

There have been rumours of a President's Cup coming to Britain for a few years, and now it seems that the tournament is arriving in force. An internationally famous venue, 16 World Champions on the roster, MMA celebrity support and top class production values will launch the British President’s Cup as one of the top global martial arts events. It sets the scene for the first European Olympic Games next summer where Sambo makes its debut on the Olympic stage. It has also been announced that the London Scottish Regiment Pipes and Drums will be appearing (by kind permission of Colonel Rankin-Hunt, CVO, MBE, TD, Regimental Colonel) to ensure that the event has a particular British feel.
