British Open Sport Sambo and Combat Sambo Championships

Sunday April 12th 2015

High Wycombe Judo Centre Buckinghamshire

This year the British Sombo Federation decided to use the famous High Wycombe Judo Centre for its British Open an ideal venue for two mats, plus it had a bar and café facilities. With over 200 people attending the competition the venue was full
Many nations were represented at this event obviously England, Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland but also players from Bulgaria, France, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania and Eire (Southern Ireland). The lads from Southern Ireland Lloyd Manning Gold and Rhonan Manning made the biggest impact they were excellent fighters in the men u74k class two Irish Brothers making the final, with neither of them wanting to fight each other, the oldest brother was given the title. Out of all the players I saw on the day they were the ones I thought could make an impact on the World scene. Even there young 15 year old NIAMH LOONEY was eye catching not only did she win her 15-17 age group, she also won the lightweight women event.  The heavy weight women there was only 4 players with Debbie Jackson 60K and Kerrie Penfold 64k having Walk Overs to claim a title. The Walk Over is quite common in Martial Arts and Grappling but was some what controversial in the BSF so it looks like the WO system will no longer be used in future events. With only 4 women in 60k to 67k it was decided to pool all 4 together as the BSF have still to select 60k and 64k for the Presidents Cup as all could drop to 64k. Scots Women won the Gold with other strong contender from last years President cup in 2nd place.
This year we had a lot of Masters p[layers and most in the over 45 year bracket not the fastest of movers but they certainly provide some entertaining Sambo.
The Belsey Brothers Bradley 62k and Casey 68k provided us with some excellent Sambo winning their group in style. U82k class was interesting with Danny Carrott GB taking on Veniaman Dragain known as Vinny Lithuania; Vinny had the advantage in that he has trained with some of the World Top Sambo players in his home country a place known for producing World Class Sambo Players. Danny took the fight to him but was caught with an arm lock something Vinny specialises in. u90k was also a very good group with Danny Roberts from Scotland a previous champions meeting the young Jamie Marzetti England. This was Jamie’s first time at 90k and fought well to make the final, it looked like the match was going to make the distance but on the edge of the mat he concentration slip and Danny was in like a shot, catching him with a 4pt throw the a 4pt hold down. In the past Jamie could have carried on but new International rules have changed from a 12pt majority to a 8pt majority, many of us feel this is a retrograde step but who listens to us?

Combat Sambo attracted just 12 players but this did provide some good entertainment with some excellent fights. It was improvement on last years where people just wanted to slug it out but this year they were using throws, ground holds and submissions the whole repertoire of Combat Sambo. One player got upset when the referee awarded the fight against him while in a submission, what he did not realise when a painful hold is given and you make a noise that is a sign of submission. Combat Sambo can be expensive sport as the BSF insist on special insurance and medical certificates we are told many other organisations do not expect this. The BSF like any decent organisation has a duty of care to their competitors and will continue to respect that obligation

Thanks must go to all the Referees and Officials who helped out on the day but the BSF desperately needs Referees, as 6 of the referees never got a rest all day. Martin Clarke British Sombo Federation President, Russell Dodds English Sombo Federation President and Andrew Moshanov FIAS Technical Director presented medals.

John Clarke has several Sport Sambo competition to be held during the year at the Warriors G A training Hall in Sittingbourne, Colin Carrott will be holding an event at the Spitfire Club in Capel Le Ferne, Russell Dodds Bedford Grappling Academy will also be holding an Open English in October and robin Hyslop will organising a Sport and Combat Sambo event in Scotland, National Coach John Clarke assisted by Colin Carrott will be in Northern Ireland in September to give a course and FIAS Technical Director will soon be doing a course in Sittingbourne.

So there is lots to do if your are interested Sport and Combat Sambo and remember we are always on the look out for new people to start club for us

Many are asking about the WHITE BOARD FIAS the world Body for Sambo has asked us to get involved as the WHITE CARD” IS A SYMBOLIC INITIATIVE TO CELEBRATE THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SPORT FOR DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE.
