Northern Ireland Sambo Course
Colin Gary John |
Since the early 1990’s Chris St John had been President of
the Northern Ireland Sambo Federation and keeping the flag flying for Sambo in
that country. In the mid 190’s BSF President FIAS Grandmaster Martin Clarke
visited Belfast to give a 2-day course for him and his organisation. Since that
date Chris has regularly attended courses and competitions in England
Since then one of his Pupils Gary Clarke (great name but no
relation) has been promoting Sambo at his club at Enniskillen. To encourage him
even more the British Sambo Federation sent over John Clarke BSF National Sport
Sambo Coach and BSF Technical Director Colin Carrott to Coach a course and examine Gary.
The Course was held at Fermanagh Lakeland forum Enniskillen and
proved very successful and Gary was awarded his BCSA Level 3 Sambo Instructors Award.
In fact so successful was the course that John and Colin have been invited back
in August also both John and Colin are going to assist the Northern Ireland
Federation in running the first Northern Ireland Sport Sambo Competition

With next years Presidents Cup being held in Scotland under
the auspices of the Commonwealth Sambo Association and Scottish Sambo
Federation, Sambo is being taken to all parts of the United Kingdom.
Suggestions have already put forward that Northern Ireland maybe the place in
2017. There is one country, which the BSF does not have a national Organisation
and that is Wales so we are looking for a representative in Wales so the
Presidents Cup can be held in 2018 in the Country

IJF and Some Judo Coaches are wrong
Sambo/Judo 16 Year Olds win Judo medals
The International Judo Federation has decreed that Top Rated
Judoka throughout the World cannot compete in any other Grappling Sport. I am
surprised that IJF Judo Organisations tolerated this type of Dictatorship especially
as it will not encourage other Grapplers to try Judo. Yet the decisions has
been made BUT what has happened is unscrupulous Judo Coaches who are frightened
to share their members with other grappling styles have been telling all their
Judoka that they are not allowed to train with other styles, they also maintain
that by training with other styles will ruin there Judo!
RUBBISH
I had quite a successful Competition career in Judo but I
also competed and trained in Sambo and Olympic Wrestling plus I tried Kurash,
Lucha Canaries and belt Wrestling, if BJJ was about when I was competing I
would have tried that as well. Many other top Judoka have trained in other
grappling styles and all agree it enhances their Judo.
One of the silly things people say is if I done another
Grappling Sport I could forget myself and revert back to my rules RUBBISH Here
is an example when I first started promoting Sambo in the early 1980’s I asked
some Jiu Jitsuka to give it a try and their excuse for not competing was they
may forget themselves and start punching, kicking and biting which obviously
against the rules. I then confused them by saying would a Rugby player who also
played football suddenly pick up the ball and run with it?
Three 16 years olds from the Young Judo Club/Warriors
Grappling Academy Sittingbourne recently entered a Judo Championships at the
famous High Wycombe Judo club and all won medals Gold’s Silvers and Bronzes in
both their age group and the Adult section all have just got their Brown Belts
and they were beating Adults and Dan grades all 3 have been to the World Junior
Sambo Championships representing Great Britain.
Brandon Springet , Fergus Hamilton, Richard Seaman train
with John Clarke National Sport Sambo Coach who is also a 5th Dan
judo. So what does that tell you? Also we had Ryan Coombes a Top class adult
Judoka who is now training in Sambo he won Gold in his weight 82k and Silver in
the open weight
So who is right the IJF and certain Judo Coaches who want
total control over Judoka or those Coaches who say have a go to their adult
players and try other grappling sports? You decide

World Sport & Combat Sambo Championship 2015
The World Sport and Combat Sambo 2015
Casablanca Morocco
This Championships get better
and harder year on year but it was pleasing to see many different countries
winning matches and winning medals
This year the British Sombo Federation took 4 players:
Emma Herd Sport Sambo
u68k, Johnny Heron Sport Sambo u100k, Matthew Clempner Combat Sambo u100k,
Chris Hoban Combat Sambo u82k
Martin Clarke President
BSF, Robin Hyslop President SSF, Matthew Clempner Coach, Valerie Clarke
Hon President BSF
2 Physiotherapists:
Kamila Kinga Gens, Jemine Thacker
3 Spectators:
Stuart Hoban
Connor Hoban
Gerald Tom Heron.
As per usual the stadium for the World Championships has 3
International Size Mats and in most cases has a very large TV screen, over the
past few years FIAS (International Sambo Federation) has had its own TV Company
which films it live over the Internet. The tournament itself was organised
extremely well, there was a few problems
over the language barrier although this did not affect the British Team . The
Opening ceremony was quite spectacular and loud.
When GB hosted the World Championships in 1992 there was
just 12 nations remembering that was in the era of the USSR, which encompassed
many Countries. Now FIAS has 82 registered countries with another 20
provisional members.
On Day 1 we had just one fighter Matt Clempner he was one of
our main hopes for a medal. In 2012 Matt had won a Bronze in the 100k plus
Sport Sambo event but since then has lost weight and has been competing in
various Strike and Grapple events with some success recently winning a medal at
the Presidents Cup. Matt started the match at a steady pace putting some strong
strikes and when they locked in we all thought Matt will throw his opponent but
the technique did not work and they both stumbled to the ground with Matt being caught with a leg
lock. Sadly the repercharge system only allows players to contest for Bronze if
they lose to the finalist and Matt opponent went out in the next round.
Day 2 we had two fighters up Johnny Heron u100k Sport Sambo
and Chris Holbon u82k Combat Sambo
Johnny Heron a very experienced Judoka who has competed for
GB and trained in Japan but he had the misfortune to have the Georgian Loriashvili
first round who was eventually to win Gold. As soon as they took hold you could
see Johnny was in the wrong weight Category he eventually went out 8 pts. to
Nil. His fight for the Bronze did not fare a lot better but on this occasion he
pulled back right near the end to gain a point although he lost this was a
better performance.
Chris Hoban came out like a storm in his first fight against
the Czech fighter beating him 5 puts to 1pt a cracking win and our first win in
a World championship for many years his next fight was against Kazakhstan which
he lost but even this fight he showed no fear and was trading head buts punches
as good as anyone. The Kazak fighter
went to reach the finals so Chris went to fight the Moroccan for Bronze, which
he beat confidently even though the noise from the audiences was phenomenal.
The Moroccan Team were no easy fights they had been winning matches in Sport
and Combat Sambo throughout the Tournament. That was as far as Chris would go
he lost out in the Bronze playoff to the Ukrainian. Chris was one of the Best
GB fighters I have seen for a long time as he comes from Manchester not a
surprise once he improves on his throwing Techniques I am sure he will medal
next year
Day 3 Emma Imrie Herd Sport Sambo u68k
Emma a very experience Judo player form a famous Scottish
Judo Family fought in her second International Sambo event. Once again she seem
well out of her weight group as all the other players were bigger then her. She
lost her only match to a Serbian Player who dominated the match. Emma put up a spirited
fight and went the distance to lose on points
On watching the GB team over several years I believe our
chances of World medals will come in the Combat Sambo and the reason I say that
is the Combat Sambo players compete in many Strike and Grapple competitions and
they train like professionals with Matthew Clempner Senior in charge of Combat Sambo
he has a lot of International plans for them. The Sport Sambo players are not
so lucky as the only other Jacket Wrestling they can do is Judo and with the
IJF now telling all top level Judoka they can not compete in other Grappling
Sports this is now being misunderstood by the majority of Judoka who think they
also can not take part in other grappling sports. I believe the dictatorial
attitude of the IJF will see an even further decline in Judo Jacket
Wrestling like BJJ does not help Sport Sambo players because theirs is mainly a
ground fighting sport while the emphasis in Sambo is throwing So the answer is
for more sport Sambo events in GB no matter how small and for Sport Sambo to
travel to Open Internationals. John Clarke Sport Sambo National Coach will be
taking players to the Paris Tournament in May, there is the Dutch Open in March
and a Belgium Open in February. From now on the BSF will only select people for
World and Europeans if we consider they have a chance of winning a match, no
longer can these two competitions be just to give players experience this
can be done in minor Internationals.

Anti Doping Seminar
Much has been heard about Drug taking in Sport, our International Sambo Federation FIAS has its own Programme to eradicate drug abuse. Just before he died Russell Dodds attended one of these courses and I was given his participation certificate. Where ever I go Russell name comes up he had a massive influence on everyone he met even at the World Championships many were coming to me telling me stories about Russell he certainly will not be forgotten

FIAS Congress 2015
World Sport Sambo/Combat Sambo Championships
Casablanca Morocco
November 12th – 16th
The World Sport Sambo/Combat Sambo is divided into two
sections the Thursday was the 27th FIAS Congress and from the Friday, Saturday
and Sunday it was Competition event to find the 2015 World Champions
FIAS Congress this year was very important and we were told
FIAS has 82 full member countries and 20 provisional members. This in itself
shows how Sambo has developed over the last 30 years, in 1992 when Great
Britain hosted the World championships in Herne Bay, there was just 12 countries
in FIAS. In the early days of FIAS we could hold a meeting of Country reps in a Small Restaurant, which it often was, now we have to have a large
meeting room with interpreters etc. to cater for the countries from all over
the World.
Several very important issues were discussed especially the Calendar of Events I will circulate a full list at a
later date, the next years World Championships will be held in either the USA
or Bulgaria. Finance in Major sports Organisations is always a controversial
issue but the Financial Report by Andre Klymanko was excellent, a very open and
honest report something other International Sports Bodies can learn from.
The major issue was that of the Legal Battle between FIAS
and other group claiming to be FIAS led by David Rudman ( A well respected Sambo Player of the past) and Mr Shultz. This
battle has had civil and criminal implications and was very damaging for World
Sambo. It was with great joy that the matter has been resolved without any of
the above being proceeded. This was due to all parties getting together and
resolving the issues. President Shestakov should be congratulated on this
outcome as it proves that a good International President can put the interest
of his sport before anything else and congratulations to FIAS Legal Commission
led by India’s Suresh Gopi for taking World Sambo through these legal
difficulties. Thanks must also go Dalil Essakali President of the Royal
Moroccan Sambo and Tai Jitsu Association who organised the event.
Some exciting news for Scottish Sambo Fans it was decided
the next Presidents Cup will be held in Scotland in November 2016. For the past
two years the Cup was held in Dartford and Manchester and was extremely
successful the events came under the auspices of the British Sombo Federation.
Next year to encourage Sambo throughout the UK the venue will be Scotland and
will be hosted by the Scottish Sambo Federation a BSF affiliated group. Unlike
the past where it was a British Team next year’s team will be a Scottish Team
The coordinator for
this event will be Robin Hyslop he has told me there will be a Scottish Trials
in February to select a team for this event the trial will be open to all
members who are Scottish and are members of a BSF recognised association. The
format will be also different as there will be 4 Combat Sambo weight 2 Ladies
and 2 Men’s Sport Sambo event and all positions in the relevant groups will
gain points for an over all Winning Country
Also can I bring to your attention two Internet publication
which have been very helpful to Sambo they are www.insidethegames.biz and https://www.joomag.com/magazine/sport-in-profile-uk-issue-10/0590499001443086811
FIAS also has its own Fan Club look it up on facebook and
have your say

SA Sport Sambo/YJC Junior Judo
Southern Area Open Sport Sambo Championships
BSF Centre of Excellence
Sittingbourne
October 18th 2015
The Warriors Grappling Academy led by BSF National Sport
Sambo Coach decided to organise this event at the Centre, which is also home to
the Academy. Although the venue is small compared to a large Sports Hall its
till has a 9m x 9m mat area and the most important part it was free. Sambo in
the UK is the UKSport recognised body but does not receive any grant aid so
everything has to be paid for via entry fees from competitors.
This competition was the most successful one so far held at
the club it attracted fighters from all over Kent, London and Bexley. The
fights were very impressive and explosive and had the audience captivated as
expected the Warriors Grappling Academy picked up most of the medals.
Sittingbourne was where the British Sombo Federation was formed in 1986 with
just a handful of members. Now with have representation N Ireland, Scotland,
England South West, South East, London, North West, North East, North and
Northern Home counties.
The Warriors will be holding several Sport Sambo
Competitions and Courses in the New Year.
National Coach john Clarke and English Sambo President Colin
Carrott are of to Northern Ireland in November to to give a course
Young Judo Club Open Junior Judo Championship
Swale Martial Arts Club
Once again he YJC organised a small Judo event for Clubs in
Kent and it proved very successful with more and more children participating,
there will be several small events in the New Year but the big one will be in
April when the YJC is returning to the
Swallows Leisure Centre this event will attract Competitors from all over the
Country. Any one interested in Judo should email: BFBCSA@GMAIL.COM
