IJF Rule Change is Rubbish
You need to read the link before you read my reply
So grip changing i.e.
Boxing will be allowed for 45 seconds nearly a 1/4 of the contest see the
Oseakomi times have changed to the same as sambo. 4 minute Contest whats that
so non Judoka do not get bored or to fit advert spaces on TV? Who can remember
Brian Jacks competing in a 20 minute Final Now that was long The IJF has lost
the plot. When will they realise that Judo will never be a spectator sport The
people who watch Judo are Judoka, ex Judoka and their families if they want to
change it into just another Grappling Sport try looking a Sambo rules which has
no foreign language and is easy to understand with simple hand signals . Keep
Judo alive and return to the rules of the 1970's when there was a lot more
people doing Judo. This is change for change sake and does not improve Sport
Judo it is just the bureaucrats of the IJF justifying their position and pay
Another point I am not keen on Newaza
and always prefered Tachi Waza but we can not get away from the fact that BJJ
has become very popular (not my cup of Tea) and the reason is because there is
hardly any throwing and is all about rolling around the ground. So maybe to
encourage BJJ players to take up Judo would it not be a good idea to increase
the ammount of Newaza allowed in a Contest? just an idea from someone who is
not keen on Ne Waza

Christmas Sambo
Sittingbourne Open Sambo Christmas Tournament
On Saturday December 3rd BSF National Coach John Clarke
organised a Sittingbourne Open Sambo Competition. He allowed players who did
not have Sambo kit to wear Judo/Kurash equivalent to try and encourage those
who do not do the Sport on a regular basis
The turnout was relatively small and sadly we only had one
Female entry. Women Sambo throughout the World Is very popular but we just cannot
drum up the interest in GB for women competitors.
The entire turnout was small
we did attract players from Latvia, Russia and Lithuania. One of the Juniors Julius
Vaisvila flew in from Lithuania to compete in this event and he was superb
demolishing every one before him. Strange how some can fly in from another
country yet those who live locally cannot be bothered support local events
Although the event was small it
produced some excellent Sambo from all participants including the boys event.
What was encouraging was that many arm locks and leg locks were used, these
have always been a weak point with British Fighters so it was encouraging to
see them being used
John will be running many more of these
small events in Sambo and Judo at the Swale Martial Arts Club Sittingbourne
over 2017. Also at the Club in February we will be running a Combat Wrestling
and Belt Wrestling Championships both of these styles are Non Jacket wrestling
forms. Combat Wrestling is a mixture of Sambo/Judo/Freestyle Wrestling and Belt
Wrestling is where you hold the Belt to try and throw each The Clubs main
interest is Sambo and Judo but we recognise the benefits of trying other
grappling sports. We are looking into trying a Chinese Jacket Style very
similar to Judo called Shuai Jiao
In June next Year we hope to run a
Major Event at the Swallows featuring Sambo Judo and Combat Wrestling and lets
not forget we are sending a Coach from the club to the British Sambo
Championships in Birmingham in March and IBF Multi Nation Judo Tournament in
Belgium in May

Judo & Wrestling
In my Career which till 1980 was mainly Judo I made an attempt to make the Moscow Olympics sadly I only made a reserve place for what ever reason. Yet before I made the BJA Olympic squad I had tried Freestyle Wrestling and Sambo in both sports pre 1977 I had won medals. On making the Squad I was advised not participate or train in other grappling Sports something the IJF are
preaching to day. Yet the article below from one of the Worlds most successful Judoka Brian Jacks suggest that I was right to try other grappling sports. Interestingly enough a good friend of mine Matthew Clempner was an International Sambo Player pre 1977 and went to the 1980 Moscow Olympics in Wrestling yet was ranked No 3 in GB for Judo it certainly did him no harm. Since 1980 I went on to become a reasonably successful Samboist, I also have tried Kurash, Combat Wrestling, Sport Jiu Jitsu, Canaria Lucha plus I introduced CombatSombo Grappling. Today there are many other grappling forms which can be tried, I have to admit I am not keen on the styles that just roll around the floor always preferring throwing styles. My advice to aspiring Judoka do not be blinkered in believing that Sport Judo is unique and learning other grappling sports will not ruin your Judo BUT at the same time there is nothing wrong in sticking purely with Judo
